Botox® is the trade name of an injectable medication manufactured by the company Allergan. The company created the name Botox® as a shortened version of the protein used to make it, which is botulinum toxin. Other companies also manufacture botulinum toxin under other names, such as Xeomin® made by Merz.
Botulinum toxin is a protein that works by temporarily weakening or blocking the connection between nerve and muscle fibers. As our muscles get hyperdynamic from repetition in our facial patterns (making the same squint or scowl face over and over) our skin starts to fold in that area. By weakening those muscles, we give our skin a chance to recover.
No. Botulism is a disease that comes from bacteria. It was most commonly acquired by improper sterilization techniques during canning procedures for food. Botulinum toxin is a purified protein. It is not bacteria.
Botulinim toxin treatment takes 2-10 days to take effect and can last up to 6 months. Regular use maintains the best results as the muscles lose some of their hyperactivity. As it wears off, wrinkles caused by movement begin to come back. The wrinkles do not worsen, but return to baseline.
There is no set age for everyone, but the earlier that preventative treatment can be started, the better the results. For instance fine lines are much easier (and less expensive!) to treat than deep folds.
