Healthy Teeth Start at Age 1, Schedule a Pediatric Dental Visit at Our Office in Paoli, Pa

When should I take my child to the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends taking your child to the dentist no later than 1 year of age. This visit is usually focused on education and oral hygiene instructions for the parent.

When do I start brushing my child’s teeth?

A baby’s first tooth develops somewhere around 6 months of age. This is only an average age; some children’s teeth come in much earlier or much later. It is recommended to start brushing as soon as the first tooth has erupted. A very soft, child-sized toothbrush works best with a small smear of toothpaste.

How can I help protect my child’s teeth?

Instilling good oral hygiene habits is the biggest key to success. It is important to enforce brushing twice a day under your supervision until they are old enough to effectively clean all areas of their mouth on their own. Flossing should be introduced as well, especially in areas where their teeth touch. Sealants may be recommended at routine hygiene appointments. Sealants seal and protect deep grooves that may occur as adult teeth are forming.
